Fitch Ratings has maintained its "deteriorating" outlook on the global reinsurance sector for 2027, extending the downgrade it first applied to 2026 a year ago.

The rating agency's latest Global Reinsurance Outlook, released ahead of the Rendez-Vous de Septembre in Monte Carlo, describes operating conditions weakening gradually from what remains a fundamentally sound base, rather than signalling any acute deterioration in the sector's financial strength.

"Our expectations of further price declines, although less pronounced than in 2026, amid abundant capacity drive the outlook," Fitch said in the report. "This, alongside rising claims costs, will lead to margin and revenue erosion, although not enough to materially affect the sector's very strong capital position."

Capital supply continues to outpace demand, the agency said, sustaining buyer-friendly market conditions and intense competition between reinsurers heading into the January 2027 renewal season.

Soft market expected to continue

Fitch expects the soft property market to continue into 2027 absent a very large loss event, with selective loosening of terms and conditions beginning to compound the pricing declines already underway.

That combination, looser terms alongside falling rates, is typically how late-cycle softening accelerates, since cedants gain negotiating leverage on structure at the same time they're paying less for capacity.

What's different this cycle, according to Fitch, is the claims side of the ledger. Pressure continues to build from economic, social and medical inflation, climate change, and emerging liability exposures tied to geopolitics and AI, at the same time reinsurers are absorbing a larger share of losses as primary insurers' retentions normalize down from the elevated levels set during the hard market.

Fitch argued this combination, while adding earnings volatility, should actually help limit how far the softening goes compared with prior cycles, since reinsurers retain less room to simply chase price down without feeling the claims impact directly.

What this means for 2027 earnings specifically

Fitch expects pricing declines dating back to mid-2024 to feed through more fully into 2027 results, compounding with renewed inflation pressure and climate-driven claims costs to produce what it called a moderate deterioration in combined ratios and return on equity.

That's a real earnings impact, not just a pricing story, though Fitch was careful to frame it as a moderation rather than a reversal: preserved underwriting discipline, portfolio optimization, continued prior-year reserve releases, and supportive investment income should all help cushion the effect on headline profitability.

A sector still performing at record levels

The deteriorating outlook lands against a backdrop of genuinely strong recent results.

The four largest European reinsurers, Munich Re, Swiss Re, Hannover Re and SCOR, posted a record average return on equity of 21.5% in the first half of 2026, according to Fitch's own data, driven by strong underwriting and investment performance. That's the tension underpinning this entire outlook cycle: a sector generating exceptional returns precisely because of the hard-market discipline it built after 2022 and 2023, now attracting enough capital and competition to erode the same conditions that produced those returns in the first place.

AM Best has framed the same dynamic in starker terms, describing the global reinsurance sector as sitting at a "critical inflection point," with capital pushed to record levels by strong earnings since 2023 and competition intensifying sharply in property lines specifically.

The open question AM Best has posed, and one Fitch's own outlook implicitly shares, is whether underwriting discipline holds through this next leg of softening or gives way to more irrational competition that could set up a sharper correction later.

What differentiates performance from here

Fitch's own conclusion is that the coming year will separate reinsurers less on scale than on execution.

"Intelligent cycle management and disciplined capital allocation will differentiate individual reinsurer performance," the agency said, a framing that puts the burden on individual underwriting and portfolio decisions rather than broad market conditions to determine which reinsurers outperform through the softening phase.

For cedants and brokers negotiating January 2027 renewals, that suggests continued room to negotiate on price and terms, but also a market where reinsurers with the most disciplined underwriting are likely to be the most selective about where they extend that flexibility.
